ADHD Coach

The ADHD Coach

When I was little I didn’t lie in bed at night thinking, “when I grow up I want to be an ADHD coach” in fact I didn’t even know what Adult ADHD was then or that ADHD coaching existed (actually it properly didn’t official exist 20 years ago). But when I was little I DID lie in bed at night thinking, “when I grow up I want to be a nurse’. So when I was 18 years old I left home and started training to be a nurse in my native country England.

After working as a nurse for a number of years I realized that while I loved the hustle and bustle of daily hospital life there was never enough time to do what I really loved which was talking with the patients and their families. After some soul searching I decided to pursue a different path.

While I didn’t know what that path was exactly, I thought studying a psychology would be a good start. In my final year of my psychology degree I happened to be watching Oprah and one of her guests was a Life Coach. It was the first time I had ever heard of a ‘Life Coach’ but I thought that that would be perfect for me. After a three year coach training program I started my own private practice.

ADHD Coaching

I strongly believe everything happens for a reason, and what happened next is a perfect example of this.  I began to receive lots of telephone calls from adults with ADHD asking if I could coach them. I quickly realized I loved working with this group of people. I read everything possible and educated myself about Adult ADHD and developed my own system that helped my ADHD coaching clients, experience wonderful and dramatic results as their negative ADHD symptoms reduced and how they felt about themselves, their confidence and happiness increased exponentially.

It was then that I decided to write the system I had been using in my ADHD Book. , “Untapped Brilliance: How to Reach your Full Potential as an Adult with ADHD” and was super proud that Dr. Hallowell and Dr. Gabor Mate endorsed it.

“Untapped Brilliance is brilliant! In logical, concrete terms, it shows a person how to get to the gifts wrapped up in ADD and not suffer from the clutter and frustration that holds so many people back. Full of hope and practical wisdom, this book is a treasure.” ~Edward Hallowell, M.D.

“Untapped Brilliance is a little gem of a self-coaching primer. In straightforward language, Jacqueline Sinfield provides practical advice and simple, easy-to-follow techniques that will help adults challenged by AD(H)D to re-create their lives.” ~Gabor Mate M.D.

This book has reached many more people than I could coach personally and has helped those readers with their ADHD treatment.

While my formal education has unquestionable been extremely helpful in my work as an ADHD Coach, what has been most helpful was not learned in a classroom or text book, but my own personal experience. At the age of twenty –eight I was diagnosed with ‘severe dyslexia’ . In England dyslexia is graded from A to F, and I was F. I find that being diagnosed so late in life, means that I have a similar experience to my clients who often didn’t find out about their ADHD until later in life. It also means I can relate to clients in a highly unique way.  I had struggled tremendously through school, yet found my own ways to do tasks, sometimes consciously sometimes unconsciously. While dyslexia and ADHD are different conditions, both ADHD and dyslexic leave those who have them feeling they are very different from other people. We are right brain dominant and this makes living in a world that is very left brain a continuous challenge.

The good news is, we have special gifts and talents. When I choose to embrace what I enjoyed doing, do what I was good at, and stopped feeling bad about everything else, my life transform into one where love each and everyday and I experience more happiness than I ever knew was possible. This is the philosophy I bring to my ADHD coaching and my clients experience similar results.
