A Wonderful Act of Kindness

by Jacqueline Sinfield on January 9, 2009

We hear in the news about all the mean people in the world. However, what we hear less of is how kind people can be. Yesterday I experienced a wonderful act of kindness that touched me deeply.

On Wednesday we had a lot of snow fall in Montreal. I am not sure how much exactly, but it was a significant amount. Thursday I drove to my office and parked my car in the parking lot, just as usual. When I left work that evening it was 9pm, and I realized that I would not be able to simply drive out of the lot. A snow plow had driven once down the street making a slim clear path for cars. However that left two lines of snow on either side of this cleared path. There were no gaps in this line of snow and they were tall and wide. There was no way I could drive over the snow in order to drive my car home.  Grey’s Anatomy had already started and I didn’t want to miss more than absolutely necessary, so the only option was to start to dig a clearing large enough for my car to drive through. I got the spade from my trunk and started to dig. Eskimos have many words to describe snow. I would describe this as ‘heavy’ snow.

After ten minutes of digging,  I looked up, and thought it was a mirage, because a man with a huge metal shovel was walking towards me. I knew it was real when he said, “Need help?” Because there was two of us and because he had a really great snow shovelling technique (apparently due to years of having a long drive way), I was out of there in no time. He waited to make sure I could in fact make it through the space we had created, and I opened my window and called out my thanks. I drove home feeling happy that there are still really great people in the world.
